Sonoma’s Lure: How The Wine County Sets Itself Apart

healdsburg-wineries-zichichiWhen you think of taking a trip to “wine country,” what’s the first destination that pops into your head?

Don’t lie – we know you’re thinking Napa Valley.

That’s all well and good (Napa has earned its reputation for a reason, after all), but if you’re looking for a more casual atmosphere with the chance to actually sit down with winemakers, we think that Sonoma County is a great choice!

Sonoma Boasts Both Big and Small Attractions

Sonoma is rapidly proving itself to be a dynamite wine country experience by emphasizing its unique characteristics and offerings you won’t find anywhere else.

For starters, the physical land of the county is huge; it covers over 1500 square miles (not counting bodies of water) and also reaches to the California coast! For companies or individuals who want to incorporate some good hiking and views into their trip, Sonoma’s got the space to do it.

All this space offers fertile ground for growing grapes, which is what many Sonoma families have been doing for generations before they began making wines. We’re sure glad they did, too, because they’ve created some delicious wines from some of Sonoma’s most popular appellations:

  • Dry Creek Valley produces famous Zinfandels, as well as Syrahs and Petite Sirahs.
  • Alexander Valley always presents some tasty Cabernets.
  • Russian River can give you some of the best Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays you’ve ever tasted.

Additionally, the county’s becoming famous for its character; Sonoma welcomes you into its lush borders, invites you to kick off your shoes, and says, “Let’s chat!” Here, your hopes to sit down with the owner of a family-owned winery and talk winemaking are likely to happen.

Essentially, you’re not going to feel like a complete tourist in Sonoma. Sonoma treats you like a valuable guest (even a well-known, close friend.) With its approachable business owners and citizens, you’re going to find smaller businesses eager to share their experience (and love) of wine and the wine country with you!

The town of Healdsburg is a perfect example of this Sonoma charm. It has an attractive town square with inns and hotels ofall sizes, tasting rooms, concerts in the summer, shops and galleries, a plethora of restaurants (which are typically family-owned like the wineries), and farmer’s markets where you can eat fresh off the vine. You’ll always leave Sonoma towns like Healdsburg with experiences hard to find anywhere else.
